Real World Data Scientist

This is what you will do:

The Epidemiology and Real World Science (RWS) team in Alexion–AstraZeneca's Rare Disease Unit accelerates patient access to innovative medicines by advancing the scientific use of Real World Data (RWD). In this role, you will support the application of RWD across the rare disease portfolio, aligned with AstraZeneca best practices and standards. Building on AstraZeneca's strong Real World Evidence (RWE) foundation and internal data assets, the team is growing through a dedicated Real World Data Science capability.

In this role, you will contribute to solving challenging problems using innovative methods to deliver Real World Evidence for stakeholders with a focus on Clinical Development, Regulatory, and Patient Safety. The ideal candidate is a curious, self-directed learner eager to develop expertise in deriving value from routinely collected healthcare or observational data across areas such as Public Health, Pharmaceutical R&D, Commercial/Payer, and Patient Safety.

You will contribute methods expertise, support analyses of RWD, and assist with study design, data source selection, and guidelines for RWD utilization, with an emphasis on patient safety. You will also support Alexion/AZ's data strategy by assisting with due diligence on data vendors and providing informatics support for Therapeutic Area data acquisitions.

You will be responsible for:

· Supporting analyses of real world data sources: Assist in implementing advanced secondary analyses of data from EMR, claims, and primary observational sources as required by Therapeutic Area (TA) RWE strategies

· Collaborating in a rapid analytics environmen: Work alongside stakeholders to help ideate and implement appropriate, impactful analyses

· Providing technical input: Offer clear technical options and recommendations to support strategic decisions made by Alexion/AZ observational study teams on study design, data partner selection, and RWE data utilization guidelines

· Assisting with vendor oversight: Support the monitoring of work performed by contract personnel and vendors

· Building knowledge of external partners: Develop and maintain awareness of the capabilities of potential external partners in RWE, especially for US and emerging markets.

· Demonstrating best practice: Apply and learn best practices in Real World Data Science across multiple domains and stakeholder groups

You will need to have:

· Minimum of a Master's degree in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Public Health, Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, or a related field

· Relevant academic project work, internships, or at least two years of professional experience in a pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, or consulting environment

· The duties of this role are generally conducted in an office environment. We would prefer for you to have:

· Enthusiasm for coding - this is a hands-on role, so be excited to write and learn code!

· Eagerness to learn new methods and ways to use real world data to improve the practice of medicine

· Exposure to or coursework involving EMR, disease registries, and/or insurance claims databases

· Familiarity with clinical data standards, medical terminologies, and controlled vocabularies used in healthcare data and ontologies (e.g., ICD-9/10, SNOMED)

· Foundational knowledge of or interest in pharmacoepidemiology, statistics, machine learning, or data science approaches

· Strong communication skills and an ability to collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary teams

· Proficiency in SQL

· Proficiency in either R or Python
