Senior Manager, Global Community Investment, Alexion – AstraZeneca Rare Disease

The Global Community Investment Sr. Manager, Alexion, sits within the Health Equity team of Global Corporate Affairs and is both a strategic and tactical role, supporting the Global Director, Community Investment to deliver and grow our global portfolio of community investment. This includes our Alexion Charitable Foundation and Alexion Access Foundation in the US, corporate donations, matching gifts and volunteerism.

This role will be the lead for community investment within Alexion, AstraZeneca Rare Disease, advancing our mission to drive greater health equity, measure and report progress, define and set targets and policies, and work closely with our non-profit partners to ensure sustained impact.

The ideal candidate will bring practical, hands-on experience with project management, communications, knowledge of the US prescription drug access landscape, and executive and stakeholder engagement. Teamwork, diplomacy and an open mind are essential character traits that will aid the candidate when working with the non-profit sector in countries and communities all over the world. You are a strong communicator and can easily adapt your style to meet cultural differences.

We believe that you have experience working with the non-profit sector or working in a corporate giving/Foundation role, and delivering community investment programmes or knowledge of Corporate Social Responsibility in the health field would be considered an asset to this role. You will also have had experience with US health insurance, the prescription drug benefit structure, and patient access challenges present in the US health care system, including but not limited to prescription benefit managers and alternative funding vendors. It would be a plus to have had experience with compliance related issues associated with patient assistance programs.

What you’ll do:

Community Investment: Alexion Charitable Foundation (40%)

Review, vet and administer all request management processes related to the Foundation which included, but are not limited to, intake, screening for completeness of submissions, dissemination, review, approval, notification, supply, generation of grant agreements, grantee partner and reporting management.

  • Oversee ~2 million USD annual grant-making budget (avg. 16 grants per year including board operations, prospect research and outreach, ACF open call, application processing, contract execution, grantee relationship management, measurement and data collection.

  • Ensure conformity with internal legal, compliance and audit functions for all activities. Review and update relevant templates to ensure compliance with legal standards.

  • Schedule, organize and lead Board of Director meetings (min. 4 per calendar year). Author of meeting minutes and formal vote collection.

  • Speak as the Foundation President at internal and external events to increase employee awareness and external engagement.

  • Provide constant grantee partner engagement and stewardship through quarterly phone conversations, annual impact report reviews and other ad-hoc outreach.

Community Investment: Alexion Access Foundation (40%)

  • Daily oversight and execution of all aspects of the AAF operational strategy, including vendor management and contracts, application of all applicable policies audit efforts, and liaise in collaboration with key internal stakeholders to demonstrate viability and success of programs with senior leadership and Board of Directors

  • Support program acumen to access services, market access strategy, and brand teams to ensure the role of free goods programs is represented.

  • Review, vet, administer and assess all budgets, application requests, including tracking and reporting to define measures of program success and provided solid analyses

  • Speak as the Foundation representative at internal meetings to ensure senior leaders have appropriate understanding of program enrollment.

Community Investment: Corporate Donations, Matching Gifts & Volunteerism (20%)

  • Work with AstraZeneca Community Investment Director and Alexion Health Equity team to develop a global and holistic community investment strategy to enable greater health equity within the context of Community Investment and Alexion.

  • Lead Community Investment in executing Operational Plans to support Alexion’s objectives by managing program workflows, systems, processes, and training, while ensuring collaboration with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders.

  • Oversee global Community Investment reporting, ensuring data accuracy and completeness in the database, and manage the annual budget with financial metrics for forecasting and tracking.

  • Administer initiatives related to employee volunteerism, matching gifts, and review charitable giving requests, handling approval and distribution processes.

  • Ensure accurate record-keeping for charitable requests and manage vendors and partners supporting program execution.

  • Implement and maintain program SOPs, ensuring compliance with Alexion and AstraZeneca policies, with a focus on Volunteer Paid Time Off and Matching Gifts.

  • Alexion point of contact for all internal Community Investment queries, policies & reporting, and managing external requests for funding.

  • Develop a reporting methodology to support the tracking and delivery of core KPIs

You will need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in one of the disciplines related to public health, business administration, or other relevant qualification

  • Minimum three years of community investment/CSR experience in a strategic corporate giving or Foundation role

  • Healthcare industry experience (working for a healthcare company or in delivering programmes in the health sector). A focus on the topics of health equity and patient access, with a focus on the most vulnerable groups is a plus.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of community investment guidelines, standards, and reporting requirements. This may include developing policies, procedural documents.

  • Knowledge of sustainability / ESG reporting and governance, such as impact measurement, monitoring, reporting, data collection, validation, and policy.

  • Ability to combine strategic thinking with hands on delivery, hereunder the ability to understand and influence issues and decision-makers in complicated and complex situations and creating shared agenda.

  • A self-starter with an independent, proactive work ethic and the ability to work cross functionally

  • Knowledge of the Corporate community investment landscape, including subject matter expertise in charitable regulations, due diligence and best practices

We would prefer for you to have:

  • Advanced degree (Master, PhD, JD, MD) is highly desirable.

  • Global experience, with exposure to senior leadership and/or managing multi-country projects/programmes for a large corporate

  • One to two years of corporate communications experience, either at an agency or within a multinational organisation. Experience in working with creative agencies and supporting internal and external communication campaigns including adherence to brand guidelines and familiarity with social media platforms and tools

  • At least two years of non-profit programmatic implementation experience. This may include working with or for a non-profit organisation and managing multi-country programmes, technical leadership on health topics, using evidence-based measurement tools and designing Theory of Change frameworks

  • Budgetary oversight / accountability for grant administration of at least US $1 million annually
