AstraZeneca is accelerating the expansion of our geographical footprint in rare diseases following the acquisition of Alexion in 2021. Rare diseases is a high-growth therapy area with rapid innovation and significant unmet medical needs. Over 7,000 rare diseases are known today – yet less than 1% of them have an approved treatment.

As we begin to build our position as a Rare Disease leader, we seek a GCCRare Disease Medical Manager to join our Medical Affairs team. The RD Medical Manager (Hematology/Nephrology - Complement) is a full-time position and is based in Riyadh, KSA.

The RD Medical Manager will work closely with the GCC Medical TA Head for Rare Diseases to deploy and adapt the AZ RD International Medical Affairs strategy to the local market(s) within the GCC cluster, including tactics and execution. 

The GCC RD Medical manager reports to the GCC RD Therapeutic Area Medical Lead (Associate Director).

The GCC RD Medical Manager leads a team of field-based RD medical science liaisons (MSLs) and Medical Advisors based in KSA and in the Gulf. 

What you’ll do

  • Planning, managing and overseeing execution of all medical tactics and activities set out in the GCC RD strategic brand plans
  • Building, providing leadership to and line management of a RD field based MSL team and Medical Advisors
  • Providing medical expertise in areas such as presentation review, Abstracts & publications, implementation of registries, cohorts or clinical trials (mainly non-interventional)
  • Cross-functional support for developing and execution of RD brand initiatives
  • Work with key internal and external stakeholders to identify optimal access pathways to the AZ product(s)
  • Identify and highlight gaps in the care pathway as the catalyst for change to improve the SoC
  • Co-developing and co-executing reimbursement and HEOR activities
  • Creating and maintaining relationships with thought leaders, other healthcare providers (HCPs), and Patient Association Groups (PAGs)
  • Partners with HCP’s and PAGs on patient identification initiatives that can be locally adapted
  • Elevate the awareness/profile of the designated disease area

Medical Value – Access

  • Responsible for providing fair-balanced, objective, scientific/clinical information to external and internal customers across all the key products within our portfolio. External customers can include KEEs, Managed Care Organizations (MCOs), Private Health Insurance (PHI), healthcare decision-makers, and influencers in the country
  • Responsible for supporting and partnering with the Key Account Manager, ensuring work on prioritized accounts
  • Responsible for the technical discussion of access by payers to generate value
  • Responsible for discussing access plans in key accounts and for ensuring that strategies and value propositions are being applied with assertiveness to customers
  • Bring insights from the field to the country access manager and the International network
  • Support the Country Access manager in proposing innovative access models for different payer models
  • Builds external relationships with recognized experts in managed markets/health care systems.
  • Participation in Market Access and Medical Affairs meetings, providing customer insights to shape current and future value propositions
  • Contribute to business planning and the Market Access strategy by providing strategic clinical input, Pharmacoeconomics/health outcomes input, and customer insight.

Contribution to Brand Strategy by supporting cross-functional and regional team(s)

  • Provide AZ with an understanding of the local medical community landscape, clinical practice trends and real and/or perceived gaps in current scientific knowledge and medical treatment;
  • Support of pre-launch activities for new therapeutic area, products and line extensions;
  • Share HCPs insight and customer needs with cross-functional and the International team;
  • Share educational highlights and insight gathered while at the scientific congress with colleagues;
  • Monitor the competitors’ activities.

Facilitate Local Clinical Research (as appropriate)

  • Participate in the development and conduction of local/regional studies (incl. non-interventional studies);
  • Upon request, assist with various aspects of local clinical trials, including scientific support, site selection, and operational issues or feasibility assessments.

Essential for the role

  • MD, PharmD, or Ph.D. in a scientific discipline
  • Minimum of 4 years experience in a medical affairs or clinical role in the Pharmaceutical or Biopharmaceutical industry
  • Experience in rare disease therapeutic area
  • Experience in hematology, nephrology, oncology  
  • Ability to understand and formulate plans in complex healthcare ecosystems
  • Proven ability to effectively build partnerships, and relationships and collaborate internally and externally.
  • Excellent presentation and written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellence in leadership, strategic mindset, project management, internal and external relationship management, analytical/problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and comprehend scientific, economic, and humanistic concepts effectively with sophisticated and technical audiences required.
  • Experience working in a managed care/ payer environment is highly preferred.
  • Training or experience in health economics, Pharmacoeconomics, or health care policy is highly preferred.
  • Advanced English for reading scientific articles.
