Job Title: Senior Specialist Veterinary

Location: Cambridge

Salary:  Excellent

Introduction to role

Are you passionate about animal welfare and scientific research? As a Senior Specialist Veterinary, you will manage multiple animal research activities, ensuring the quality of work and the effective operation of a technical team. Recognized as a specialist in laboratory animal science, you will possess a strong working knowledge of disease area strategy and animal research, advising on best practices and developments. You will direct and supervise technical support, making a significant impact on our research outcomes.

Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for designing and executing experiments in laboratory animals, creating complete data sets, with integrity and an emphasis on animal welfare. 

  • Leading as a specialist a specific area of research e.g. an animal science which is applied to Biopharma projects and platforms. Time available and priority for leading projects will be variable and will be agreed upon with line manager.  

  • Applies technical knowledge and expertise to achieve project targets in a timely fashion and to agreed quality standards. 

  • Communicates scientific findings with senior management and cross-functional project teams.  Presents information for discussion within the business and may be expected to influence colleagues in other areas/departments and/or external groups.  Responsible for creating scientific material, e.g. posters, abstracts.  Presents progress and outcomes internally and at relevant external events.     

  • Aspires to independently assess and report data with a clear understanding of its reliability, interprets findings and draws authoritative conclusions.  

  • Mentors junior scientists on technical and functional processes. 

  • Contributes to the culture of care and culture of excellence.

  • Incorporates new and innovative techniques and methodologies, including training of others.  Reports relevant findings and conclusions. 

  • Contributes to the objectives of the department through active participation in department and cross functional project teams.  Provides leadership by supporting company and departmental change.  May be expected to lead scientific and operational department objectives at the local and global level. 

  • Liaises with colleagues from other disciplines with the purpose of discussing project-related matters, sharing experiences and reporting progress. 

  • Carry out their work in compliance with the appropriate Safety, Health & Environment (SHE), quality and compliance standards, e.g. ASPA and Good Laboratory Standards (GLS). 

  • Is required to work flexibly across different areas and participate in provision of weekend, Bank Holiday and out of hours support. 

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • Extensive in vivo skills and proficient with working with a range of rodent animal models including hands on experience of surgery

  • Current or past Home Office personal license holder (modules A, B, C) or equivalent qualification   

  • Fully conversant with all aspects of the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, Directive 2010/63/EU, associated Home Office guidelines and their implications. 

  • Understanding of current principles and concepts in own area of work 

  • General understanding of Discovery/R&D disciplines

  • Fluent in verbal and written English language 

  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)

  • Excellent partner management skills

Desirable Skills/Experience

  • Previous experience of people management
