US Medical Head - Thrombosis

The Thrombosis Medical Head reports to the VP, US Medical - Cardiovascular Metabolic Disease (CVMD) therapy area and leads the US Thrombosis Franchise, consisting of direct reports (Brand Medical Directors, Field Physicians, Directors of Medical Alignment) and their teams, as well as deployed cross-functional resources. The position can be either a Senior Director or Executive Director, based upon the individual's experience.

The Thrombosis Medical Head is accountable for the development and execution of the US Thrombosis Medical Plans and leadership of the Core Medical Team, focused on the mounting evidence and indications around Brilinta. The Medical Head thrives on proactively engaging internal and external leaders. An ideal candidate has significant experience in cardiovascular disease management, a wide network of and strong relationships with external Cardiologist experts and professional societies, and would effectively build new connections and collaborations with other specialties, such as Neurology.

The Medical Head is knowledgeable of the actions of regulatory bodies – in particular, the FDA – and has experience in clinical trials’ design, conduct, and reporting.  As a member of the Global Product Team, the Medical Head represents the US on the Global Product Team for life cycle management, labeling, and other externally-sponsored research.

Typical Accountabilities:

  • Co-lead the Brilinta Brand Team with the Commercial Brand Leader
  • Lead Brilinta Core Medical Team (CMT)
  • Actively represent US Medical on Brilinta Global Product Team, incorporating US healthcare system perspectives and personal expertise
  • Accountable for the brand medical strategy and the creation and delivery of brand medical plan
  • Appropriate budget and resource management to support the brand development needs
  • Lead the delivery of US-based clinical development activities, including clinical trials, real world evidence studies, investigator initiated and sponsored research, publications, and provide critical input to value-based constructs
  • People Management and Talent Development: Inclusive leadership of a team of direct reports, subordinates, and deployed resources
  • Create an open atmosphere with clear accountabilities
  • Ensure compliance with all AZ corporate policies
  • As part of the integrated Medical Plan, ensure comprehensive engagement plan with customers and key stakeholders, e.g., Managed Care Organizations, Key Opinion Leaders, Key Institutions and Hospital Systems, Professional Societies
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key external and internal customers
  • Lead development of an Advisory Board strategy
  • Advise on Business Development opportunities and be a critical partner in due diligence assessments

Essential Requirements:

  • MD/PhD/PharmD in relevant degree program
  • Minimum 5 years in pharmaceutical/medical industry
  • Strong leadership and managerial skills
  • Proven teamwork and collaboration skills
  • Launch Experience developing and/or launching a new pharmaceutical product
  • Drug Development knowledge of preclinical, pharmacokinetic, dose-response, and Phase 3 development
  • Regulatory Strategy Experience, including: 
    • development and approval of a product through the regulatory process
    • working with the development team to prepare FDA briefing documents and participate in FDA meetings
    • NDA documentation review and development strategy
  • Collaborate with Commercial and Development in labeling negotiations for product approval
  • Comprehensive understanding of the U.S. healthcare environment
  • Strong business acumen, including working knowledge of the dynamic US healthcare environment (e.g., Payer and Provider landscape)
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally, with regular expected travel 30-40% of time

Desirable Experience:

  • Board Certification and experience in Cardiovascular disease
  • Broad cross-functional pharmaceutical and cross-functional general management experience
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a strategy-setting role within Medical Affairs
  • Global experience within the pharmaceutical industry
