Director, Oncology Policy in Europe & Canada

As Director of Oncology Policy Europe & Canada you will play a pivotal role in channelling our capabilities to catalyse policy change across European markets for the benefit of cancer patients, healthcare systems and AstraZeneca. This exciting new role leads the development and execution of Oncology Policy strategies for AstraZeneca in Europe & Canada.

In this position, you will direct internal resources and engage externally to promote a policy environment which will enable healthcare systems and AstraZeneca to succeed in:

  • Realising a bold ambition to double 5-year survival in Lung Cancer in the next five years, by improving adoption of screening and early diagnosis, acceptance of clinical efficacy endpoints and updating treatment pathways to optimize patient care
  • Maximising the potential of precision medicine across several tumour types including lung, ovarian and breast cancer by supporting clinicians and patients access to high quality, timely available biomarker tests
  • Simplifying and accelerating health technology assessments, pricing and reimbursement processes to enable broader, faster and more equitable patient access to innovative cancer medicines across Europe

You will also identify ways in which AstraZeneca can meaningfully support broader initiatives at country- and EU Institutional level aimed at strengthening the oncology R&D environment, health system capabilities and resources to address the growing burden of cancer in Europe & Canada. In this role, you will establish the oncology policy strategy at the regional level and work closely with our Government Affairs group in the Region and in countries to ensure implementation.  You will be the key counsellor to AstraZeneca country offices and assist in developing and executing their policy plans and partnering with external stakeholders.

As the Director of Oncology Policy for AstraZeneca in Europe & Canada, you understand that to be successful in this role you will develop strong, trusted partnerships with a variety of external stakeholders. You have a profound knowledge in the field of oncology and in how health systems operate. You have a special gift and motivation to find solutions which benefit multiple stakeholders. You are as passionate as we are about our work, you come equipped with an infectious energy, an entrepreneurial mindset and proven ability to move matters through collaboration.

You will be a member of the AstraZeneca Global Government Affairs and Policy organization and the extended Oncology Europe & Canada Leadership Team. You will work closely with the VP Head of Oncology Europe & Canada, regional functions (e.g. access, medical, commercial), Oncology Business Unit Heads in key markets of the region, the Government Affairs teams and with your peers in the Global Policy group.

You will report to the Global Head of Policy with a dotted line to the VP Head of Oncology Europe & Canada.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Drive and oversee oncology policy shaping activities across the Region, by working seamlessly and continuously with regional and country teams. Particular focus is on:
    • Establishing powerful policy shaping ambitions, focused strategies and impactful flagship initiatives
    • Adopting and adapting existing management tools to help prioritise and track policy shaping activities across the region, to identify and share best practices at pace
  • Develop and implement a policy shaping and external engagement strategy for the above-country level (e.g. EU Institutions) that will facilitate and/or inspire policy change at country level, in close collaboration with the European and Brussels Government Affairs function
  • Create strong external relationships and partnerships with relevant stakeholders such as policy-makers/advisors, patient advocacy groups, clinical experts and professional societies
  • Lead and contribute to multi-stakeholder partnerships with the aim to deliver outputs relevant to progressing policy discussions at Region and country level (e.g. policy evidence generation, political engagement).
  • Develop an external engagement plan for the VP Head of Oncology Europe & Canada, contribute to global engagement plan of the global EVP Oncology office to support the global and regional policy shaping priorities
  • Develop compelling policy argumentations, engagement materials and trainings
  • Represent AstraZeneca in relevant fora / organisations at the above country level in Europe (e.g. Efpia)
  • Represent the European Oncology business perspective in relevant internal global workstreams

To be successful in this role, you will need experience in the following:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with Sr. Leadership as well as peers, as well as with a variety of stakeholders
  • Profound knowledge in the field of oncology and in how health systems operate.

Other locations will be considered, however 50% of time will be from Baar, Zug.
