Associate Informatics Scientist I
We are seeking a highly motivated scientist to join the Microbial Sciences group to study the microbiome in drug development utilizing various molecular tools at AstraZeneca’s Gaithersburg, MD site. The position offers a unique opportunity for a talented scientist to work in a dynamic, innovative and collaborative environment. S/he will not only interact with scientists in the Microbial Sciences group but will be collaborating with translational and clinical scientists in multiple therapeutic areas, as well with data scientists within the DS & AI group to develop his/her career at the interface of basic research and drug discovery.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
The Scientist will use data generated from next generation sequencing or metabolomics technologies to characterize microbiota and metabolites in animal and human samples from various body sites to understand microbiome and metabolome changes during disease progression and/or from drug treatment. The candidate is expected to be savvy with handling sequencing data, have strong analytical abilities and may conduct experiments in the wet lab.
Education: BS degree (with 3 to 5 years’ experience in academia/industry) or MS/MPH (preferred) in bioinformatics, epidemiology, statistics with a strong background in microbiology, virology or related discipline.
Extensive experience in processing and analyzing microbiome-based sequencing data from preclinical and clinical samples.
Experience conducting statistical analyses with relevant metadata to interpret experimental results and design appropriately powered preclinical studies.
Demonstrated ability to conduct a high-level novel research project with a strong track record of developing creative solutions to complex problems.
Must be motivated and capable of working independently as well as collaboratively
The applicant must have strong written and verbal communication skills with a strong publication record.
Skilled at conducting analysis of 16S rRNA, ITS, metagenomic whole genome sequencing data from microbiome samples
Very strong programming skills in R, Unix, and/or other languages commonly used for bioinformatics analysis. Must be proficient in applying microbiome bioinformatics tools such as QIIME, DADA2, HUMAnN2 etc.
Must be adept at applying appropriate statistical methodologies for analysis of processed microbiome data and interpretation of results.
Preferred but not required skills include experience with high-performance computing cluster environments, multi-omic analysis, pipeline development, familiarity with sequencing and library preparation for 16rRNA and whole metagenomic shotgun sequencing.
Preferred but not required skills also include proficiency in RNA-seq data analysis
